Mexico Part 1

Day 1

January 28, 2010. 4:30am. The adventure begins.
Destination: Cabos San Lucas, Mexico

We unfortunately did not have a direct to Los Cabos, so we killed a few hours in the Calgary Airport.

Mid-afternoon we finally touched down in Cabos. We were greeted with a hot temperatures and the sun shining. Our first task was to find a cab driver to take us to our resort. We found transportation to our resort - free transportation, but it required us to listen to a time share presentation for 90 min. They also threw in 3 free whale watching tickets and $100 US cash. Sweet deal. We had been in Mexico only 30 minutes and we were already scoring deals thanks to Kristen.

Our resort was approximately an hour away by cab, so we ended up saving $85 to and from the airport each way. That in itself made listening to the time share presentation worth it. On the way to the resort we needed to pick up some basic groceries (as we were not staying at an all-inclusive resort), so the cab driver kindly waited for us while we picked up a few things. It was interesting browsing through the Walmart in town - most of the groceries are the same EXCEPT the butter. Do not buy margarine down in Mexico. It was by far the most disgusting thing I have ever put on a piece of toast. It tastes more like chemicals than actual margarine. Just so you know.

Gareth & Kristen outside of the Mexican Walmart.

Next stop: Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Spa and Resort. When we pulled up we were completely awestruck at the beauty of our new digs for the next week. We scored big time.

This view is from the lobby looking up at half of the resort. There is still another half that is below the lobby. The grandeur of it was incredible.

View from the lobby looking out over the ocean.

View from our balcony overlooking a good chunk of the resort and the ocean. All of the rooms at this particular resort had a balcony that faced the ocean. I thought that was pretty cool.

By the time 7:30pm rolled around, we were all pretty exhausted from a long day of travel. We thought it best to head to order some food up from the Bistro and head to bed early so that we could wake up at a reasonable time in the morning.

DAY 2

Gareth and Kristen had agreed the day before to take in another time share presentation at our resort in exchange for $150 credit for food/drink at our resort. Again, it seemed like a no brainer. While they were doing that, I took the opportunity to do some exploring on my own. I wandered the resort and headed down to the beach, which was unfortunately not a swimming beach due to the high tide, the undertow and the huge waves.

The Main Pool

A view from the beach looking up at our entire resort. At this point I was still in awe at the size of this place.

I love this girl. She made traveling a lot of fun!

Gareth was pretty fun too!

For the remainder of the day we hung out by our pool, soaked up some sun and enjoyed every bit of Happy Hour.
Our first time ordering, we had a little bit of a mix up with our drinks. You see, happy hour included buy one get one free drinks. Kristen and I thought that was a great deal, so we were each going to have a drink. Well, Omar (our wonderful bartender) took that as meaning we each wanted a buy one get one free Cactus Slam. So, in the end, instead of each getting one drink, we enjoyed 2 each. There could be worse ways to start your vacation :)

It was yummy - especially the Mango Daiquiri

Day 3

Day 3 involved yet another time share presentation that all 3 of us attended at another resort. We enjoyed a yummy brunch  followed by a rather intense sales pitch. In the end we walked away with no time share (which was exactly what we were wanting - we were just in it for the free stuff. What can I say, we are mennonites). Apparently I just had to say that I still lived with my parents and the sales people back right off. Sweet.

For those of you who know Kristen, know that she is incredibly organized and likes to have things very clean. Her house is immaculate in terms of cleanliness.

Please note the pictures above and below. This was Kristen's portion of the room with her stuff. Note the unfolded clothes and the disarray. You might also want to note that this picture was taken on day 3. Yup folks, that right. Day 3. Three days had passed and Kristen had not folded any item of clothing. I was so proud of her.

Promptly after taking these pictures, Kristen proceeded to hang up her clothes and put things in drawers. It was lovely to see that Kristen too, can be messy. Love you Kristen!

The rest of the day, again, involved sitting by the pool and taking part in more happy hour. Because we were not staying at an all inclusive, we had the privilege of trying out different restaurants. There is a bunch of Pueblo Bonito resorts in Cabos and when you stay at one, you can go to all of the other ones and eat at their restaurants. Saturday night we thought it might be kind of fun to head over the Rosé Resort for supper. Supposedly they had more of a nightlife and younger scene than our resort (our resort was pretty quiet - definitely an older crowd, but it made relaxing and napping very easy).

At the other resort there were many statues. This one particularly caught my attention. It was a naked man, so naturally I had to pose with it.

Gareth has this thing where he poses as a mermaid when they are on trips. I'm not entirely sure about the history of this or why it first started, but it was amusing. I went with it and snapped a few mermaid poses of him throughout our trip. This was a side of Gareth I had never experienced before and it was fun.

The supposed "Night Life" at the Rosé Resort was much to be desired. The lack of night life and activity (ie - volleyball games, poker games, ping pong tournaments, etc) could definitely be improved upon. That was a little disappointing, but not the end of the world. We were still in Mexico in 30 degree weather, so we couldn't really complain.

Stay tuned for Part 2...
